Melania Trump Spent $174k on Hotels During a Day Trip to Toronto

Travel is part of the job when you're the First Lady, but it sure is rather expensive — at least for Melania Trump.

According to government spending records obtained by Quartz, when Melania visited Toronto, Canada back in September 2017 for a 12-hour trip, she racked up some rather hefty hotel bills. Like, $174,000 worth. (Yes, those costs fall on taxpayers' shoulders.)

The trip, which was the First Lady’s first solo trip abroad, was planned around her appearance at Prince Harry’s Invictus Games, where she would be leading the U.S. delegation. However, according to Quartz, Trump didn’t even end up spending the night, so how exactly did she rack up such an astronomical amount of money for such a short trip? That seems to be the question that everyone is pondering.

Melania made multiple hotel stops throughout her trip, according to her itinerary, which Quartz acquired, and the six separate hotel charges ranged in cost from roughly $12,000 to $49,000. Other additional costs for the trip included transportation, which came out to $21,000, and the hotel bill for Trump’s advance team (who travel ahead of the First Lady for security reasons), which came to $18,000.

The whole thing is a bit perplexing, especially given that the total is almost double the cost of her $95,050 hotel bill during her visit to Cairo, Egypt last month.

This is a stark difference from previous First Lady Michelle Obama’s reported travel costs. According to Quartz, during a two-day trip to China in 2014, she racked up over $220,000 in hotel bills, but that figure included her advance team, staff, and security.

All in a day's work?
