The new HBO documentary, Queen of the World, is giving viewers a unique insight into the British royal family. Importantly, the documentary features an exclusive interview with Meghan Markle, including revelations about her unforgettable Givenchy wedding gown.
As well as revealing that she sewed her "something blue" into her wedding dress, it's also made apparent in Queen of the World that Meghan's wedding gown was directly inspired by Queen Elizabeth II's 1953 Coronation gown.
In Queen of the World, Meghan discusses Prince Harry's surprise when he found out that she included embroidered flowers from all of the Commonwealth countries in her veil. And the documentary's voiceover points out that Meghan's veil was an extra special surprise for Queen Elizabeth: "Few will have been more touched to see [the veil] than the queen herself, for this was a poignant echo of the gown she wore on her coronation day."
The reason for this significance is because Meghan's veil appears to have been modelled on the Queen's Coronation gown, which at the time featured the flowers of the eight Commonwealth nations that existed in 1953. As Queen of the World iterates, the inclusion of the flowers in her Norman Hartnell gown was the "Queen’s way of putting the Commonwealth at the heart of her coronation."
In this way, Meghan's decision to put the Commonwealth at the center of her wedding outfit sent an important message to the Queen. Meghan was confirming that, alongside Prince Harry, she'd continue the work that Queen Elizabeth set out to do all those years ago. Meghan and Harry will embark on their first royal tour this October, when they visit New Zealand, Australia, Tonga, and Fiji.
Meanwhile, Prince Charles expresses his utmost admiration for his mother in the documentary as he ruminates on her coronation: "When you think how young the Queen was when suddenly my grandfather died, to be required to take on such an enormous task, to have met that challenge the way she did is truly remarkable. It appeared effortless, but it jolly well isn’t, of course."
The documentary Queen of the World debuts October 1 on HBO.
