Meghan Markle Can’t Wear a Hat at Wimbledon for *This* (Kind of Understandable) Reason

From fascinators to panama hats, Meghan Markle loves a festive topper. So why did the duchess literally hold on to her hat during her Wimbledon outing with Kate Middleton yesterday? Turns out, there’s a royal reason.

In 2016, before she was an official duchess, Meg pulled a Pippa Middleton and rocked a Wimbledon-appropriate hat like it was her job.

This year, when she stepped out with K-Middy to watch her pal Serena Williams play, however, her hat functioned like an impractical purse.

The reason? Although Meghan was permitted to wear her go-to hat while watching in the stands in 2016, her new royal status means that she now watches from the royal box. According to The Sun, spectators sitting in the royal box are advised to dress “smartly” and are prohibited from wearing hats because they could block others’ view, which kinda makes sense.

In the choice between sun protection and a royal title, we guess we’d pick the latter, too.
