Meghan Markle seems to have a few non-negotiable rules when she travels. Number one, she's always dressed like a walking outfit inspo Pinterest board. Number two, she must make time for some self care.
The Duchess of Sussex took a last-minute flight to New York City on Friday, September 6 to watch her close friend, Serena Williams, play in the U.S. Open finals. Before her Saturday afternoon appointment at the highly anticipated match, People reports that Meghan Markle and an unnamed friend dropped by Modo Yoga, an NYC studio that includes a specially heated room, for class on Friday evening.
Despite her high profile, Markle reportedly took her hot yoga class alongside 60 other people. But it seems no one asked Markle what she thinks of Brexit or the upcoming season of The Crown during savasana. A source told People that "there were lots of sweet, knowing smiles" between patrons—and that was it.
Yoga has been part of Markle's workout regiment since her Suits days, when she could be seen walking around Toronto with her yoga mat. It's also a pastime handed down by her mother, Doria Ragland, who teaches yoga classes in Los Angeles.
“My mom is a yoga instructor, and I started doing mommy-and-me yoga with her when I was seven," Markle told Best Health Magazine in 2015. "I was very resistant as a kid, but she said, 'Flower, you will find your practice—just give it time.' In college, I started doing it more regularly."
The studio she visited ahead of the U.S. Open was also part of her pre-royal routine. “She has been going to Modo Yoga for many years and tries to do so whenever she is in New York,” another source told People. “It was the perfect remedy for jet lag.”
The Duchess of Sussex has mentioned using her sun salutations to ward off travel fatigue before. When she traveled to Australia on her first royal tour last fall, she told reporters that she did a yoga routine after waking up at 4:30 a.m. from jet lag.
Markle's yoga stop wasn't photographed, which means we don't have a glimpse at her interpretation of royal workout dressing, but we'll be seeing a lot more of her style in the coming weeks. After wrapping up her quick visit to the U.S., she'll formally return from maternity leave to launch her fashion line with Smart Works, and then head on her first family royal tour with Prince Harry and baby Archie in Africa.
