Meghan Markle Said It's "Liberating" to Finally Be Able to Speak for Herself

The Duchess of Sussex told Oprah Winfrey that she wasn't "allowed" to do an interview with her in 2018.

In the latest teaser for Oprah Winfrey's CBS interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, the Duchess of Sussex opens up about just how "liberating" it is to finally be able to speak freely.

In the clip, Winfrey reminds Markle that she had asked her for an interview three years ago, ahead of her May 2018 royal wedding.

Of course, Markle had had to turn down the opportunity — though it wasn't her decision.

"I remember that conversation very well," Markle told Winfrey with a smile. "I wasn't even allowed to have that conversation with you personally, right? There had to be people from the comm., sitting there."

Winfrey went on to ask her subject what made this the right time to finally speak on the record.

"So many things," Markle said pensively, "that we're on the other side of a lot of life experience that's happened and also that we have the ability to make our own choices." She clarified that she "couldn't have said yes" to Winfrey's 2018 ask, noting, "that wasn't my choice to make."

"So as an adult who lived a really independent life to then go into this construct that is different than I think what people imagine it to be," she continued, "it's really liberating to be able to have the right and the privilege, in some ways, to be able to say yes, I mean, I'm ready to talk ... To be able to make a choice on your own and just be able to speak for yourself."

The interview, which Oprah reportedly considers "the best she's ever done," airs Sunday, March 7, on CBS.
