In case you somehow missed this major royal news, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are being evicted from Frogmore Cottage—their home in the UK that was gifted to them by the Queen. In fact, the couple confirmed that King Charles had asked them to leave the premises in a statement from their rep, who told Page Six, “We can confirm the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been requested to vacate their residence at Frogmore Cottage.”

And while the initial public reaction to Harry and Meghan being told to pack up their stuff and leave Frogmore was full of side-eye, apparently they aren’t the only royals being targeted with an eviction notice. In fact, this is “just the start” and the “tip of the iceberg.”

According to an anonymous “senior figure” at the Palace who spoke to the Evening Standard, “It is not about cuts. It is about getting the best value for money from those on the payroll. Sometimes less is more.” Another source somewhat saltily noted that “the King is not some sort of housing association for distant relatives.”

There is one option if royals want to keep their homes though: Start paying rent at commercial rates. Which, if you’re staying in a giant estate, could be a lot of money. As an insider put it to the Evening Standard, “Properties will be let at commercial rates going forward and to people outside the family. Where it is in a palace environment, they will of course be security vetted.”

The King’s senior staff members have reportedly been making it clear to extended family members that if they cannot afford to pay for their homes and apartments on their own, they should “cut their cloth,” which sounds like a v posh way of saying 👋✌️.
