Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to take part in 24-hour TV show this weekend

Meghan Markle will make her first public appearance this weekend since giving birth to daughter Lilibet in June. Alongside her husband, Prince Harry, Meghan will join a host of other celebrities for a special 24-hour TV show in New York.

The Global Citizen Live event, which will take place in New York's Central Park, is "calling on G7 countries (the world’s wealthiest nations) and the European Union to immediately share at least 1 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses with those most in need."

Speaking about The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's support of the cause, Global Citizen Live organisers said: "Two of the strongest voices on vaccine equity are joining this once-in-a-generation event."

But it's not the first time Meghan and Harry have spoken out about vaccine equality. Earlier this year they penned a letter to manufacturers of the COVID-19 vaccine. It read, "The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated health, social and economic inequality globally. The global vaccine rollout thus far further deepens these disparities, with the poorest and most marginalised populations most adversely impacted."

On top of that, to celebrate their son Archie's second birthday, they also lead a global fundraiser to support Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Talking at the VAX LIVE event about his and Meghan's involvement in the campaign, Prince Harry said, "The virus does not respect borders, and access to the vaccine cannot be determined by geography. It must be accepted as a basic right for all and that is our starting point."

Other celebrities supporting Global Citizen Live include Beyoncé, Camila Cabello, John Legend, Demi Lovato, Ed Sheeran, Lizzo and Naomi Campbell.

Meghan Markle has kept a relatively low profile since welcoming her daughter Lilibet on 4 June. Although she hasn't made any official public appearances, Prince Harry has been busy travelling between the US and the UK for various royal engagements. In April he returned to the UK for his grandfather, Prince Philip's funeral, and again in July to unveil a statue dedicated to his mother, Princess Diana.

The relationship between the couple and the Royal Family has been strained in recent years, since the Sussexes opted to step down from senior royal duties. However, it's been reported that the couple have offered the Queen an olive branch, and hope to visit in the coming weeks so that she can meet her namesake, Lilibet.
