In the fourth episode of Netflix's Harry & Meghan, Meghan Markle shared new details about her surprise baby shower, which her friends threw for her in 2019 while she was pregnant with Archie.

The event took place during what Meghan and her friends described as a dark time for the duchess, when she felt isolated and "controlled" by the royal family, and her mental health was suffering.

"My girlfriends surprised me with a really beautiful baby shower in New York," Meghan recalled of the event, which took place in a suite at the Mark Hotel. "They were like, we're gonna shower her with love, we're gonna shower her baby with love, and she's gonna survive this."

Amal Clooney and Serena Williams were among the attendees of the shower. "It was just so cool, and so fun, to try to have an intimate moment," Williams says in the documentary. "I don't think I understood that there was no intimate moment that one could have." The doc then notes that Meghan and her friends drew backlash from tabloid journalists in the UK for what they deemed an "extravagant" event, prompting Meghan to ask: "Why are you taking such a beautiful moment and trying to ruin it?"

Suits actress Abigail Spencer, who gives an emotional interview in the documentary about what it was like to watch her friend suffer amidst attacks from the tabloid press. "That was a really dark time, and I didn't know what to do," she recalls. "They are in this complex organism that I don't know anything about, or how to help, and I'm not allowed to say anything."
