Meghan Markle Has Been Making Calls to Get Out the Vote
Meghan Markle has made it very clear over the past few months that she’s putting a lot of her focus and energy into getting out the vote in America ahead of the election on November 3.
While she and Prince Harry were still working as senior members of the royal family, they had to mostly steer clear of politics—but now the Sussexes are settled in California with baby Archie, and Markle has more freedom to share her views, much like she did prior to becoming a royal. While she has not publicly endorsed a candidate, she is all about young people, especially women, voting this fall.
Not only has the Duchess of Sussex made numerous public statements, but she’s also been straight up calling voters directly, according to Gloria Steinem.
“Meg is herself smart, authentic, funny, political. She came home to vote,” Steinem told Access Hollywood. “And the first thing we did, and why she came to see me, was we sat at the dining room table here—where I am right now—and cold-called voters. And said, ‘Hello, I’m Meg,’ and ‘Hello, I’m Gloria,’ and ‘Are you going to vote?’ That was her initiative.”
Could you imagine? The mere chance of a call from Meghan Markle or Gloria Steinem is enough reason for me to stop screening unknown numbers. Steinem went on to talk about what Markle means to her.
“She is such an inspiration to me, because she has a kind of stereotype hanging over her head, which is princess,” she said. “The whole idea of princess is a problem. We had a whole revolution to get rid of royalty.”
In August, Steinem and Markle sat down for a backyard chat (and an appearance by Markle and Prince Harry’s dogs!) to talk about representation and voting.
“I’m so excited to see that kind of representation. You know, for me, being biracial, growing up, whether it was a doll or a person in office, you need to see someone who looks like you in some capacity,” the duchess said. “As many of us believe, you can only be what you can see. And in the absence of that, how can you aspire to something greater than what you see in your own world? I think maybe now we’re starting to break through in a different way.”
