On May 16, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, was one of the six honorees at the Ms. Foundation’s 2023 Women of Vision Awards: Celebrating Generations of Progress & Power. At the event, in addition to turning heads in a gorgeous golden cutout dress on the carpet, Markle gave audience members some much-needed inspiration in advocacy as well as a glimpse into her tumultuous life these past few years.

Markle’s speech began by thanking world-renowned activist Gloria Steinem, who happens to be the founder of Ms. Foundation. “Thank you for the leadership that has brought all of us here tonight,” Markle began, per Town & Country. “And to my friend Gloria for the inspiration that you are, for your mentorship, your sage advice, your extraordinarily cheeky sense of humor, and of course, for your incredible friendship: Thank you.”

Later on in her speech, Markle addressed the British tabloid scrutiny she’s had to endure as a royal. “The narrative on repeat that surrounded me allowed me to recognize that part of my greater value and purpose in life was to advocate for those who felt unheard, to stand up to injustice, and to be not afraid of saying what you know is true, and what is just, and what is right,” she said.

“I suppose the point is, it’s just never too late to start,” she said at the end of her speech. “You can be the visionary of your own life. You can charter a path in which what you repeat in your daily acts of service, in kindness, in advocacy, in grace, and in fairness—that those become the very things that are recognized by the next wave of women, both young and old, who will also choose this moment to join the movement and make our vision for an equitable world reality.” Such an inspiring speech!

At one point in the speech, it looked like Steinem was emotional as she held Younger’s hands.

Markle and Harry held hands firmly as they left the event.

Despite the chaos of fans and security, Markle and Harry both smiled as they walked out.
