Imagine taking music requests from the Duke and the Duchess of Sussex. That was exactly the case for actor Idris Elba, who revealed in a new interview this week that his role as royal wedding evening reception DJ was accompanied by song requests from the bride herself, Meghan Markle.
“A lot of tunes went off,” Elba told BBC Radio 1Xtra this week of the night. “You know, Meghan sent me a playlist with some bare tunes in it.”
Elba was asked to disclose some of the songs—which he classified as “West Coast”—eventually elaborating that the category included music from Dr. Dre and Tupac, both of whom were based in California. Another song request was the Whitney Houston classic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”

Since the actor remains friends with the couple, he encouraged BBC Radio to ask the Sussexes directly about their playlist details. This wasn’t his first time touching on the topic of being the unofficial royal wedding DJ. In fact, Elba previously shared with Ellen DeGeneres how he was even tapped for the role.
“Harry and I, we’ve hung out a couple of times through his dad—his dad’s charity the Prince’s Trust helped me out as a young actor. So I do a lot of work with them, Harry and Prince William, a few times,” he said. “Harry came to a couple of parties that I DJ’d, and he was like, ‘Hey man, what are you doing on the date?’ And I was like, ‘Nothing.’ He goes, ‘Hmm, would you DJ at my wedding?’ I was like, ‘Is this a joke? Are you joking?’ And he’s like, serious.”
Of course, the Hobbs & Shaw actor was just one of many celeb guests at the royal wedding, which was attended by everyone from George and Amal Clooney to a slew of Markle’s Suits co-stars.
