Meghan Markle’s Biggest Supporter? Hillary Clinton
Hillary Clinton thinks Meghan Markle “deserves a lot better.”
In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, the former secretary of state showed her support for the Duchess of Sussex, who is currently embattled in a lawsuit against a British tabloid and has admitted she’s struggling with the spotlight.
“Oh my God, I want to hug her!” Clinton told BBC host Emma Barnett. “I feel as a mother, I just want to put my arms around her. I want to tell her to hang in there. Don’t let those bad guys get you down.”
When asked if she thought race and gender had anything to do with Markle’s treatment—which has included vitriolic headlines, as well as negative social media comments—Clinton responded: “Absolutely.” Chelsea Clinton, who was doing the interview alongside her mother in support of their new book, agreed.
Clinton also expressed that she thinks people should celebrate the union of Harry and Meghan: “It is a true love story.”
It’s not the first time the 2016 presidential candidate has come to the Duchess of Sussex’s defense. When asked about the Duchess’s legal battle by London’s Sunday Times, she said that the way Markle had been treated was “inexplicable.”
She’s not the only high-profile figure speaking out in support of the duchess: in February, George Clooney said Markle was being “pursued and vilified” by the press. This summer, after the couple ignited a firestorm over their use of a private jet to fly to his house in Nice, Elton John wrote on social media: “I am deeply distressed by today’s distorted and malicious account in the press surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s private stay at my home [...] I’m calling on the press to cease these relentless and untrue assassinations on their character that are spuriously crafted on an almost daily basis.” Dozens of female MPs from British Parliament signed an open letter of support for the duchess. “On occasions, stories and headlines have represented an invasion of your privacy and have sought to cast aspersions about your character, without any good reason,” it reads. “Even more concerning still, we are calling out what can only be described as outdated, colonial undertones to some of these stories.”
