The duke and duchess’s new deal will be “scrutinized” by the royal family.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry just landed an impressive Netflix production deal, which I think we can all agree is huge and exciting news worthy of several exclamation points, so !!!!!!
This is one of the couple’s most major work moves since stepping down from official royal duties—but apparently, the palace is still going to be involved in the details. A “royal insider” tells The Mirror (via The Express) that Meghan and Harry’s contract will inevitably be “scrutinized by the royal household”—which was actually part of their agreement upon stepping down as working royals.
“Harry and Meghan did leave as working members of the family with everyone’s best wishes and it is sincerely hoped they find the happiness that appeared to be lacking in their lives,” the source said, somewhat saltily. “However, it goes without saying any deals they are making will be scrutinized by the royal household.”
The source continued by explaining that “under the terms of their deal to forgo their royal duties, they agreed any commercial deals would be subject to discussion. This deal with Netflix, any speaking engagements, or other corporate work are examples. Both the royal family and senior courtiers will be aware of how this looks to the public, especially as the couple have not yet paid back the £2.4 million they promised to refund to the taxpayer for Frogmore Cottage, which will be their UK base.”
Honestly, slight eye rolls to this last part, as Meghan and Harry will doubtless pay back that sum in time. And when it comes to their contract, it seems unlikely that the Sussexes would have signed anything this major without checking with the royal powers that be, so let’s go ahead and assume Her Majesty approves and move on!
