Megan Thee Stallion Responded to Drake's Name-Drop on 'Circo Loco'

Drake's new album just dropped and it’s sparked a media frenzy for all the wrong reasons. The Canadian rapper's latest project, Her Loss, featuring 21 Savage, was released this morning. Well, fans didn’t hesitate to devour the tracklist. But while listeners scoped out their next favorite song, they discovered what's seemingly a harmful reference to Megan Thee Stallion.
In the track, “Circo Loco,” Drake may be suggesting that Megan lied about an incident with Tory Lanez. In 2020, Megan claimed Lanez shot her in the foot during an argument. Lanez has maintained his innocence, but in a 2022 interview with Gayle King for CBS News, Megan recounted the alleged assault and provided evidence of the shooting. The interview included medical records which confirmed Megan’s injuries. Still, some believe she fabricated the story for attention.
In “Circo Loco,” Drake says, “This bitch lie bout gettin shots, but she still a stallion.” Though it seems to be a play on words, people were quick to hold him accountable. One person tweeted, “Drake has never been someone who is unaware of what words he decides to use.” Another wrote, “Hold Drake to account until he removes that bar from the record. He can change the digital release. Look how quickly Beyonce changed the sample with the Kelis dispute. So it can be done.”
Megan reacted to the song as well, tweeting, “I know I’m very popular but y’all gotta stop attaching weak ass conspiracy theories in bars to my name.” For the past two years she has combated intense online bullying, and spoken about the backlash she has faced for reporting Lanez to the police. As Drake's new song began trending, she doubled down and tweeted, “Stop using my shooting for clout...Since when tf is it cool to joke about women getting shot!”
Drake has yet to respond to the backlash. However, his choice to release such a flippant line about gun violence, while the rap community mourns Takeoff’s tragic death, is an undoubtedly odd one. Perhaps he didn’t realize the irony of his actions, but the lyric promotes misogyny and fails to condemn violence, which ultimately harms everyone.
