Meet the winner of the 2024 Mojave Max Emergence Contest

LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) – We met the winner of this year’s Mojave Max Emergence Contest! She and her classmates were pretty excited!

It was Keira with her 3rd and 4th grade gate class at Goldfarb Elementary. Her guess that Max would come out of his springs preserve burrow at 2:45pm on April 23rd was partly based on research into his previous emergences.

She told us:

“In other years, he kept coming out later and later in the day, so I thought maybe later in the day, too, around two.”

And it didn’t seem to hurt that Goldfarb has it’s own desert tortoise on campus, Goldie.

Max emerged at 3:09pm on April 23rd.

To make sure she wouldn’t get nervous around all the cameras, Keira had a class friend, Gisele, with her.

When the Max mascot showed up they were caught a little off guard but they got over it.

Iris from “Get Outdooors Nevada” had Keira show her classmates just one of the prizes coming their way.

Next week the class goes on a field trip to the Springs Preserve to meet Max in person, learn more about tortoises – and have a pizza party!

Although – truth be told – Keira seemed even more excited about winning a year of free visits to National Parks.

But she and her teacher, Ms. Tyler, each get laptop computers!

Keira’s was one of more than 4,000 entries in this year’s Max contest.
