Meet the founder behind this plant-based, biodegradable glitter company

Get to know the innovative beauty brands redefining what it means to be part of the beauty industry and the fearless leaders behind them on In The Know’s video series “Beauty Rebels.”

Wearable glitter instantly makes any outfit sparkle (literally). However, what many consumers fail to realize is that this beauty product can be quite harmful to the environment and our water reserves.

That’s where Saba Gray comes in. The young entrepreneur is the founder and CEO behind BioGlitz, a company that’s “taking the litter out of glitter.”

“Instead of using a polyester-based film, which is traditional glitter’s base, BioGlitz is a plant-based cellulose pulp derived from eucalyptus trees and then cosmetic pigments and just 0.1 aluminum,” Gray explained to In The Know. “It is biodegradable and compostable.”

BioGlitz sells every type of biodegradable glitter imaginable. The company’s signature product is a cosmetic glitter that’s wearable “on the eyes, the face, the limbs, your hair — all over.” However, they recently collaborated with Bioglitter to create Textile Glitz, a biodegradable glitter for textiles.

“Pretty much all glitter that you see on clothing, on shoes, accessories,” Gray explained.

Gray grew up figure skating, which is how she became acquainted with glitter. Initially, her association with the sport made her averse to glitter, but when she got older and started working in the fashion industry, she started to appreciate all the shimmer and shine.

“Working with a stylist, I started seeing glitter on the set all time and I realized, like, glitter can be punk, it can be chic, it can be goth, it can be anything you want it to be,” she said. “I realized that glitter is powerful.”
