Cillian Murphy

Cillian Murphy—who played the father of the atomic bomb in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer—is a father and husband off screen.

As the Peaky Blinders star accepted his award at the 2024 Palm Springs International Film Awards, he thanked his family for "putting up" with him.

"Cause I don't ever really get to do this too often, I want to say thanks to my family. Two-thirds of them are sitting down there. We had to leave one of them at home cause he's doing exams," Cillian said. "But just thanks for putting up with me—putting up with kind of the half me and the shadow me and the absent me and the remains of me when I'm doing a film like this or work in general."

He added, "You're always there and I love you for it. So thanks, guys."

How many kids does Cillian Murphy have?

Who are Cillian Murphy's kids?

Cillian is a father to sons Malachy Murphy and Aran Murphy. The Dark Knight actor's first child, Malachy, was born in 2005, and his second child, Aran, in 2007.

The family lived in London for 14 years before moving to Ireland in 2015. Cillian explained to Deadline in 2023 that he "was purely motivated by wanting to come home to Ireland and raise our kids as Irish and be near our families."

Similarly, he told The Guardian in 2016, "We wanted them to be Irish, I suppose. It’s amazing how quickly their accents have adapted. Even within a year of moving back, they are fading into this rakish west Brit kind of thing. Which I think, hopefully, will get them lots of girls when they’re 15."

The Irish Mirror reported in 2023 that the actor's home in Ireland doesn't have internet. “I’m a father of two teenagers, I once was young. I recognize how tricky it is for a young person today in society," he said. “It is a very complex time growing up, things are changing a lot at a very accelerated rate. We’re all aware of the effect of the internet online and life online. It feels to me like lots of kids, like their life exists inside of this device. The idea that empathy would form part of a curriculum is an excellent idea. Young people are caring and compassionate and willing to be."

While Cillian once told The Standard that his kids "were suitably underwhelmed" by his work and that he was "trying to keep them in that state because it’s such a silly industry," his youngest is following in his acting footsteps. In February 2024, it was reported that Aran had joined Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams in the cast of Taika Waititi's movie Klara and the Sun.
