As people across the globe continue to make more sustainable choices in their lives, many restaurants are working to do the same. Some restaurants have shifted towards sustainability by turning food waste into compost, using less water, switching from plastic to paper straws, and more. And according to Restaurant Business, McDonald's might be next up when it comes to ditching plastic straws for strawless lids.

Unlike the strawless "sippy cup" lids at Starbucks, the version at McDonald's features a pullback tab that remains closed until you're ready to pull it open to take a sip of your beverage.

"McDonald's is currently testing strawless lids for our cold beverages in select U.S. markets," a rep for McDonald's shared in a statement. "These lids help optimize our packaging and eliminate the use of small plastics, just one example of the many solutions we're reviewing as part of our ongoing global commitment to reduce waste across restaurants and advance recycling."

One of the U.S. markets where the strawless lids are being tested is Minneapolis, Minnesota. For customers visiting a participating McDonald's in Minneapolis, they'll reportedly have to ask for a plastic straw if they would like one.

In addition to their negative impact on the environment, the use of straws also comes with a handful of other unpleasant side effects: they don't protect your teeth, they can cause gas, and lastly, they have the ability to cause unnecessary wrinkles and lines overtime.

The company has also been working toward other sustainable efforts. By the end of 2025, McDonald's aims to reduce plastic in Happy Meal toys and have all primary guest packaging sourced from renewable, recycled, or certified materials.
