Maya Jama on Stormzy reconciliation rumours and Ben Simmons split

New Love Island host Maya Jama has opened up about everything from her previous relationship with Stormzy to her split from Ben Simmons.

Ahead of the new series of Love Island launching next week (it's happening, people!) Maya spoke to The Times about her four year relationship with rapper Stormzy, who she dated until 2019.

"We were so young when we met, just beginning our careers," she explained. "I was starting at MTV. He’d not even released a single at that point. We were just little babies.

"I don’t think either of us knew it was going to be such a big thing. We were just: we’re young and in love and we’re going to go for it and work really hard. We’re just together. We never really did red carpets. We didn’t do any of that stuff."

The pair were the centre of reconciliation rumours recently when they were seen attending the GQ Men of the Year 2022 awards in November, with a source telling The Sun, "Stormzy and Maya are together again. They’re taking it slow but are very much back in each other’s lives after a long time when they didn’t speak or see each other."

A rep for Maya insisted at the time that reports were "false" but that "Maya and Stormzy remain great friends."

Now, Maya has responded to the rumours in her own way, while also giving fans a small insight into her split from Ben Simmons. She told The Times, "I’m really, really single right now. Newly single. It’s only been a month.. but it’s nice."

Maya and basketball player Ben were first linked in 2019, before taking their relationship public at Wimbledon in July 2021. Later, they went Instagram official to celebrate his birthday, with Maya sharing a sweet post with the caption, "Happy birthday to youuu," and tagging the basketball player.

News of their engagement then broke in January 2022, when Maya was spotted wearing an impressive rock on her ring finger, before reports of their split surfaced in September 2022. This is earlier than "a month" ago, as Maya's interview suggests.

We can't wait to see Maya as the new face of Love Island.
