It could be several months before Matthew Perry’s cause of death is officially established, experts are reporting.

An autopsy has been conducted on the Friends star, after he was found dead in his hot tub on 28th October.

However, the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office has recorded Perry’s cause of death as “deferred”, meaning it could not be determined at this current time.

Coroners will now be waiting on a toxicology report, which could take several weeks before cause is established and published.

Perry had spoken openly about substance abuse, and said he hoped his work in helping others struggling with addiction would be something he would be remembered before after his death.

“I’ve said this for a long time: When I die, I don’t want Friends to be the first thing that’s mentioned,” he said.

“I want [helping people] to be the first thing that’s mentioned. And I’m going to live the rest of my life proving that.”

Many of Perry’s friends, loved ones and co-stars have since spoken out following the tragic news of his passing.

Maggie Wheeler, who played Perry’s on-screen girlfriend Janice, wrote on Instagram: "What a loss. The world will miss you Matthew Perry. The joy you brought to so many in your too short lifetime will live on. I feel so very blessed by every creative moment we shared."

The three co-creators of Friends, Marta Kauffman, David Crane and Kevin Bright, have issued a joint statement in memory of Perry. "We are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend Matthew's passing. It still seems impossible. All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives.

"He was a brilliant talent. It's a cliche to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew's case, there are no truer words. From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us. We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment — not just to his work, but in life as well. He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart."

While the ensemble Friends cast are yet to issue individual statements, a representative for the five told People: “We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family.

“There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.

“In time we will say more, as and when we are able. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.”

Meanwhile, Molly Hurwitz, Perry’s ex-fiance, has taken to Instagram to share her heartbreak at his sudden and unexpected death.

“He would love that the world is talking about how talented he was. And he really was very talented. As the Friends reunion was approaching, we rewatched the show together,” she said.

“Being with him as he rediscovered his brilliance was magical.”

She continued that she loved him “deeper than [she] could comprehend” and that no one in her adult life has had “a more profound impact” on her “than Matthew Langford Perry.”
