Matthew McConaughey's Video Message About Coronavirus Is a Flat Circle

Even though the coronavirus pandemic has shut us indoors for the near future, there are plenty of things you can do to keep yourself going. Exercise, cooking, self-care—all that good stuff—not to mention, you can even donate money to organizations providing relief to those coronavirus has hit the hardest.

Here’s one more thing: Watching this Matthew McConaughey speech on a loop.

In a video McConaughey posted to Twitter Tuesday afternoon, the actor gives a passionate, positive, and overwhelmingly McConaughey-esque call for the world to stay chill, keep our core resilience-respect-courage values—and, in what’s now my new favorite metaphor—turn a red light into a green light.

“I just want to say, in these crazy times that we’re in with coronavirus, let’s take care of ourselves, and each other,” McConaughey begins. “Let’s not go to the lowest common denominator and get paranoid. Let’s do our due diligence and take the precautions we need to take care of ourselves and the people around us.

Then, McConaughey dips his toe in the flat circle for a moment, channeling True Detective’s Rust Cohle to let us know exactly what we’re up against.

“We have an enemy in coronavirus that is faceless, that is raceless, that is sexless, nondenominational, and bipartisan,” he said. “And it’s an enemy that we all agree we gonna beat. We wanna beat and we’re gonna beat.”

And if you’re not sold by then, here’s a new McConaugheyism for you: Turn a red light into a green light.

“There is a green light on the other side of this red light that we’re in right now,” he said. “And I believe that green light is gonna be built on the values that we can enact right now.”

The actor wraps up the video with one final call, urging us to come together despite the terrible circumstances. And make some lemonade out of this lemon.

“This virus, this time might be the one time that brings us all together and unifies us like we have not been in a long time,” he said. “So, yes—let’s see if we can make some lemonade out of this lemon that we’re in the middle of. Turn a red light into a green light. Just keep livin’.”
