In our humble opinion, the Butterfly flaunts one of the prettiest costumes on season 2 of The Masked Singer. But who is it behind that intricate outfit? Thanks to a few telling clues that we've received from The Masked Singer so far, we're now very confident that we know the celebrity behind the insect mask.

Who is the Butterfly on The Masked Singer?

We are proud to announce that we're 99.99% sure that the Butterfly on The Masked Singer is ... singer Michelle Williams.

Let's take a look at the clues we have so far:

  • "I have been waiting patiently in my cocoon" for the past year, the Butterfly said.

  • She used to call the city of London home.

  • In the Butterfly's first clue reel, there were lots of references to religion, including a cross, men seen praying, and the phrase "take you to church."

  • In a preview episode for season 2, she also said she hopes she doesn't "fall over" on stage.

Now, how do we know these clues add up to the Butterfly being Michelle? Let's start with the first one: For the past year, the Butterfly said during her first clue reel, she has been waiting in her "cocoon for the promise of metamorphosis." While this could mean many things, Michelle has certainly had a difficult year filled with many moments of self-discovery and transformation.

In December 2018, she publicly announced her split from her fiancé, Chad Johnson, before pulling out of her role in the Broadway production of Once on This Island on "doctor's orders." Earlier that year, Michelle had opened up about her experiences with depression, which included a recent hospitalization. Since then, Michelle has poured her energy into working as a mental health advocate. (It's worth noting here that butterflies are often used as a symbol for mental health awareness.)

Furthermore, we know that Michelle lived in London for at least some time in 2009, when she starred as Roxie in the U.K. city's stage production of Chicago. She's also very open about her religion and has even released several gospel albums, which would account for all the references to Christianity throughout the Butterfly's first clue reel.

Lastly, the real kicker came for us when the Butterfly said "I just pray I don't fall over" during the sneak peek episode. In 2004, Michelle was performing with Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland on BET's 106 & Park when she famously tripped and fell on live television. Oops!

All in all, we know the Butterfly just has to be Michelle — and we hope we've convinced you, too.
