Marlins somehow score 3 runs on a sac fly as Pirates defense falls apart

The Marlins aren’t going to lead the league in many categories this season, but they’re already assured of at least one somewhat obscure crown: Most runs scored on a single sac fly.

Thanks to some rough decisions and a brutally bad throw by Pirates catcher Elias Diaz, all three baserunners scored on a bases-loaded sac fly from Starlin Castro.

The play started with Castro hitting a fly ball to right-fielder Gregory Polanco, who made a somewhat ill-advised throw to home to try to catch Dillon Peters. The throw was not in time and allowed Miguel Rojas to tag up at first base. Diaz threw to second, but the ball sailed high and right into an empty center field. Rojas and Derek Dietrich both came in to give the Marlins a 4-2 lead they would not relinquish.

The last time something like this happened? July 7, 2000, according to MLB.com, when Orlando Cabrera of the Expos drove in three runs with a single fly after a comedy of errors against the Blue Jays.
