The Law and Order: SVU season 22 finale left us all on the edge of our seats — and now, we'll have to wait a bit to see what happens next.

Given that SVU has been on since September of 1999 and is now officially TV's longest-running primetime live-action series ever, it's understandable that the end of each season makes fans a little nervous. With each passing finale, the conclusion of the entire series seems more and more inevitable. But the question is ... are they planning on ending SVU soon?

Here's some good news that'll make fans really excited: Not only is SVU coming back for season 23, but NBC gave the show a three-year renewal back in 2020, which means season 24 is also definitely going to happen. In other words, there's plenty of SVU coming your way in the future.

With that amazing news in your back pocket, keep on scrolling for details about season 23 of Law and Order: SVU:

When will Law and Order: SVU come back?

NBC announced that Law and Order: SVU will return via a two-hour season 23 premiere on Thursday, September 23 at 8 p.m. ET. At 10 p.m., Law and Order: Organized Crime will start season 2.

New SVU episodes will likely air on Thursday nights throughout the fall and run until mid- to late May of 2022.

Will Mariska Hargitay be involved in Law and Order: SVU season 23?

It's hard to imagine SVU continuing without Lt. Benson at the helm. Though Deadline reported in February of 2020 that Mariska had been signing her contract on a year-by-year basis and had yet to ink a deal for all of the upcoming installments, the actress hasn't given us any reason to believe she'll be walking away from the show anytime soon.

"I’m engaged and excited and still very much in it," Mariska told The Hollywood Reporter in 2019. A year before that, she told the same outlet that she was "in it for the long haul."

"Why would I leave? I’m so grateful," she said at the time.

Let's hope she still feels the same way heading into season 23!

Who will be in the Law and Order: SVU season 23 cast?

Right now, we expect the following cast members to continue acting in Law and Order: SVU season 23:

  • Mariska Hargitay as Olivia Benson

  • Kelli Giddish as Amanda Rollins

  • Ice-T as Odafin Tutuola

  • Peter Scanavino as Dominick Carisi, Jr.

  • Jamie Gray Hyder as Katriona Tamin

  • Demore Barnes as Christian Garland

Should there be any more cast announcements made this summer, we'll be sure to update this post as soon as possible with the latest news.
