Seattle Mariners shortstop Jean Segura says he was assaulted and robbed at gunpoint on Thursday by DICAN, the Dominican Republic’s anti-drug police.

Segura made his claims in an Instagram post. The attached photo shows several officers in or around a pickup truck. One is visibly armed. Two more are seen wearing DICAN hats.

The text is written in Spanish. Brent Stecker of ESPN 710 in Seattle says a portion of it translates to: “The DICAN stops me with rifles, they hit me, they throw me to the ground, they take my belongings, they crash my vehicle.”

Segura also says, “Today it is me, tomorrow it will be another player.”

Stecker notes that DICAN has been cited for numerous cases of extortion and drug trafficking in recent years. In one case, the former chief was sentenced to 20 years in prison for stealing millions of dollars in cocaine that was seized during drug raids.

After putting up a career-best 20 homers for Arizona in 2016, Segura was selected to represent the Dominican Republic during the 2017 World Baseball Classic. He went on to post excellent numbers in his first season with the Mariners, hitting 300/.349/.427 with 11 home runs and 80 runs scored in 125 games.

Segura was rewarded for his recent success with a five-year, $70 million extension in June. That money is certainly worth noting given Segura’s claims on Thursday.

The 27-year-old shortstop made no mention of being injured during the alleged incident. The Dominican Republic National Police have since announced a commission has been appointed to investigate Segura’s claims.
