Marijuana-Infused Rosé Is Coming Soon
If you've ever wished you could go home, put on a pair of yoga pants, pour yourself an Olivia Pope-sized glass of wine and get a little bit high instead of drunk, your time has come.
Starting in January 2018, California's Rebel Coast Winery will start selling the world's first cannabis-infused, alcohol-removed wine when new cannabis industry regulations go into effect in the state. Just reading those words probably leaves you with all kinds of questions - at least it did for us - so let's break it down.
What Is It, Exactly?
Rebel Coast Winery will launch this new line of wine with a marijuana-infused sauvignon blanc infused with 4 milligrams of THC per serving, which takes about 15 minutes to feel the effects of, according to the winery. Because the alcohol is removed from the wine, you don't have to worry about any hangovers.
"Winemakers have been making infused wine for years, but no one developed a reliable method to remove the alcohol and infuse it with cannabis' active ingredients in a way that wasn't impacting the quality of the wine," Rebel Coast Co-Founder, Alex Howe, said in a press release.
In the coming year, Rebel Coast plans on also releasing a cannabis-infused rosé and sparkling wine. You can also expect a line of Cannabidiol-infused (CBD) wines from Rebel Coast in the second half of 2018, that will have the same medicinal benefits, but none of the psychotropic effects.
How Is This Legal?
After the passing of Proposition 64, marijuana will be legal for recreational adult use in California starting in January 2018. Because this wine has no alcohol in it, it can be legally shipped directly to and sold in dispensaries to California residents who are at least 21 years old.
How Is It Made?
Rebel Coast uses grapes grown in Sonoma County and ferments them using a traditional winemaking process. After they remove the wine's alcohol, they infuse each bottle with 16 milligrams of organic tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient found in cannabis, along with essential fragrant oils called terpenes to enhance the wine's marijuana aroma.
How Strong Is It?
Each bottle has 16 milligrams of THC, so there are about 4 milligrams of THC in each glass. The state of California permits up to 10 milligrams per serving, so once glass won't knock you over.
"Our goal is not to kill you after you've had a few glasses," Rebel Coast says. "The goal is to get giggly and naked with someone. We set out to mimic the experience you'd find with traditional wine; a couple glasses will put most people in a great place."
What Does It Taste Like?
The sauvignon blanc will have the bright citrus flavors and crisp taste of a traditional glass of wine made with those grapes, but will smell like marijuana with notes of "lemongrass, lavender, and citrus," according to the winery.
How Much Does It Cost?
A bottle of the 2017 marijuana-infused sauvignon blanc will set you back $59.99.
How Do You Get It?
Currently, California residents who are 21 years old or older can pre-order a bottle of sauvignon blanc on the Rebel Coast site. The winery expects to ship those pre-orders in early 2018 and are currently planning on distributing their wine to more than 500 dispensaries across California.
For now, Rebel Coast can only ship to California residents but plans on selling their wine in other states that also have recreation cannabis allowances in the upcoming months.
