Meet Margot Robbie’s Husband Tom Ackerley and Learn About Their Low-Key ’Ship

Margot Robbie is known for playing the most badass, larger-than-life characters on the big screen (I mean, do Naomi Lapaglia, Harley Quinn, Tonya Harding, and the literal BARBIE ring a bell? Lol). How-ev-er, she’s managed to keep her love life IRL under wraps for literal years. Enter: us! We have all the intel on the actor’s husband of more than six years, Tom Ackerley, including how he met Margot and the details surrounding the production company they started together.

These two are…seriously beyond couple goals. In 2018, Margot gave Porter a super-rare quote about her ’ship, saying, “I’m a great advocate of doing business with your partner. Being married is actually the most fun ever, life got way more fun somehow. I have a responsibility being someone’s wife. I want to be better.” I’m not crying, you are!

Tom got his start with the Harry Potter movies

The Surrey, England native was an extra in the first three Harry Potter films, where he played background student roles. It’s very fitting considering Margot is a superfan of the series. The actor discussed her beau’s role in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban on The Graham Norton Show in 2020 and even joked that she would’ve married her husband sooner had she known about his days as an extra.

“He was an extra when he was a little kid—he was one of the Slytherin extras when Draco pushes some kids out of the way to see Buckbeak in the third book. He pushes my husband out of the way,” Margot revealed. Talk about a full-circle moment!

He’s been in ~showbiz~ for years

Tom is an assistant director and producer who has worked on many, many films, including The Brothers Grimsby with Rebel Wilson and Sacha Baron Cohen, Promising Young Woman, and 2015’s Macbeth. And even before that, he was a crew member for iconic movies like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Rush, and War Horse. TL;DR: He’s kind of a big deal, which is great because Margot truly deserves nothing less than to be part of a power couple! BRB, manifesting this for myself, lol.

Tom and Margot met on a movie set

The couple met juuust as she was on the brink of stardom after playing Leo’s (yes, that Leo, obvi) opposite in a movie you may or may not have heard of (hint: you def have) called The Wolf of Wall Street. Back in 2014 after the film’s release, Tom was the third assistant to the director for Margot’s next film, Suite Française. Margot revealed in a 2018 interview with The Guardian that the cast and crew became v tight while filming—so much so that they decided to move in together! “We were like, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if we all lived together?’ Someone said, ‘But you don’t live in London,’ and I said, ‘I don’t live anywhere. I’ll move.’ Three days later, we signed a lease in Clapham,” she dished to the publication. During that time, Tom and Margot lived with five others, and their friendship blossomed into a romance. The rest is, well, history because the two ultimately tied the knot in December 2016. 🥺❤️

He’s a truly fab support system

Even pros like Margot need a support team. The Australian actor has previously opened up about knowing she can always count on her husband to keep her ~chill~.

While discussing being fearful while reprising her role as Harley Quinn in the Suicide Squad sequel in an August 2021 interview with Mirror, she confessed, “Even though Harley is a character I have played before, I still got scared before shooting because I’m always nervous to start any job. I have this complete crisis of faith and think, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m not even good at acting and I can’t do this.’ Every time I do a movie, I turn to my husband and I’m like, ‘I don’t think I can do this.’ He says something like, ‘You do this every time. You’ll be fine.’” S’cute!

He’s Margot’s business partner 🥺

Even before getting hitched in December 2016, Margot and Tom co-founded their production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, in 2014 alongside peers Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr. According to Variety, the foursome came up with the idea for the company after getting drunk together following the London premiere of The Wolf of Wall Street. Interestingly enough, my ideas don’t wind up scoring me major deals with Amazon and Warner Bros., so @ Margot if you’re reading this: Was it a tequila night? Wine night? Trying to switch up the strategy here!

In the same aforementioned Guardian interview, Margot spoke about how grateful she and Tom were to get to work together on a range of projects, including her 2017 film I, Tonya, which earned her an Oscar nom for Best Actress at the 2018 Academy Awards. “We started our production company with our best friends and it continues to be a wonderful group dynamic. We all really work well together. I feel very lucky,” she gushed.

And in the time since, the couple has gone on to produce *tons* of movies together, including Promising Young Woman, Barbie, and Saltburn, which we can collectively thank for a new iconic TikTok dance.

Oh, and they postponed their honeymoon to work on I, Tonya

Get a load of this: Instead of going on a romantic honeymoon à la everyone in the world, the newly married couple at the time decided to head straight to work on the movie I, Tonya. “We did this film instead of our honeymoon. There were times we were sitting in a car parked in Atlanta, freezing cold, being like, ‘We should be on a beach right now. We should be on a honeymoon. What are we doing?!’ Following our dream,” Margot explained to Extra in 2017.

Luckily, once the movie *did* wrap, the duo managed to take the time to embark on a getaway together. “We did it after we finished shooting. It was great,” the actor recalled of their honeymoon in Tahiti. Wowowowow, good things truly do come to those who choose to film a movie in the freezing cold instead of take a warm vacay wait!!

They know how to navigate long-distance

Margot has previously opened up about the early days of her and Tom’s ’ship and how it functioned while she was away filming and he was based in London. “The most helpful thing I’ve learned from other couples in this industry is that you don’t go more than three weeks without seeing each other,” she told the Daily Telegraph’s Sunday Style in 2016, per Bustle. “Being in a long-distance relationship can be really hard when you don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. It can mess with your head, so the three-week rule is key.” FWIW, the couple were first photographed together during a New York Rangers game in February 2015, so they clearly know how to keep things ~fun~ and ~flirty~ amid their busy work schedules. Margot maaaaay have been into him first

Although Margot is quite lit-er-al-ly one of Hollywood’s most famous celebs, she and Tom have been notoriously hush-hush about their love life. In fact, the two didn’t even walk a red carpet together until fall 2017, nearly a year after their December 2016 wedding.

Even so, Margot has been open about their relationship dynamic, briefly touching on it during a May 2016 Vogue interview, saying, “I was the ultimate single gal. The idea of relationships made me want to vomit. And then this crept up on me. We were friends for so long. I was always in love with him, but I thought, Oh, he would never love me back. Don’t make it weird, Margot. Don’t be stupid and tell him that you like him. And then it happened and I was like, Of course we’re together. This makes so much sense, the way nothing has ever made sense before.” *screams in hopeless romantic*

He celebrated Margot’s b-day on the Barbie set

Real ones know that Margot is a Cancer queen whose birthday is on June 2. And because on her birthday in 2022, she was filming the highly-lauded Greta Gerwig Barbie adaptation, Margot celebrated accordingly with a Barbie-themed celebration, complete with a hot-pink Barbie doll cake inscribed with the words “Happy Birthday Barbie Margot!” in icing. Okay, not not jealous! Also that same day, Tom visited the actor between filming scenes, and the two were spotted smiling, chatting, and looking generally in love.

In June 2023, the cast of Barbie traveled around the world to promote the iconic film, and, being the supportive husband he is, Tom (who, reminder, was also a producer of the movie!) appeared on the red carpet with Margot in Korea, Australia, and Los Angeles.

Their vacations are legit goals

These two really know how to plan a getaway! On August 28, 2023, the celebs were spotted on the shores of the island of Sifnos in Greece, arriving for a relaxing vacation after Margot's highly-anticipated Barbie movie finally debuted in July. Shortly after they landed on the island, the longtime couple wasted no time soaking up the sun and packing on the PDA in the waters of Cyclades as they continued to make the most of their OOS (out of studio) time.
