Margot Robbie and Her Husband Tom Ackerley Have the Sweetest Love Story

From Prevention

Margot Robbie, 29, is nominated for an Oscar in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role as Kayla Pospisil in Bombshell, and we just can't wait to see what the Chanel ambassador wears on the red carpet this Sunday.

One thing we do know? Her cousin Julia will be her date to the 92nd Academy Awards. Robbie has a thing for bringing family members as her plus one—in 2018, she brought her mother Sarie to the Oscars.

Some may wonder if this is because Robbie is single. Nope! The actress married director Tom Ackerley, 30, in 2016, but the lovebirds keep their relationship super private. Although they recently made a rare appearance together at the 2020 Golden Globes, the couple's last red carpet before that was the 2018 Golden Globes.

Underneath all that secrecy, they have the cutest love story, and she recently assured everyone that their love is going strong. "We don't get as much downtime as we would probably like, but we both really like what we do," she told Carrie Bickmore of The Project. "We also have a lot of time to chill ... but we have a lot of fun and we love what we do."

Here's everything we know about Robbie's marriage to Ackerley, including how they met, when they got married, and what they're up to now.

First of all, who is Tom Ackerley?

Robbie may take center stage, but her husband works in the film industry, too—just behind the scenes. The Englishman grew up in Guildford, Surrey and pursued a degree in film at Godalming College. Following school, Ackerley became an assistant director and producer, working on films such as Macbeth (2015) and Brothers Grimsby (2016).

How did Margot and Tom meet?

In 2013, Robbie met her future husband on the set of Suite Francaise, a romantic World War II drama. Robbie, who is an Australia native, spent a great deal of time filming in London with the cast and crew, and she and Ackerley were even housemates. After filming wrapped up, Robbie returned home, but she came back to London in January 2014 for the premiere of The Wolf of Wall Street. Her Suite Francaise friends came to her hotel room to spend time with the star.

"We were like: 'Wouldn’t it be funny if we all lived together?'" Robbie recalled to The Guardian. "Someone said: 'But you don't live in London,' and I said: 'I don’t live anywhere. I’ll move.'" Three days later, the actress said she signed a lease in Clapham with five of her friends, including Ackerley.

When did they start officially dating?

Robbie says she had a thing for Ackerley from the beginning. "We were friends for so long. I was always in love with him, but I thought, 'Oh, he would never love me back. Don’t make it weird, Margot. Don’t be stupid and tell him that you like him," Robbie told Vogue. "And then it happened, and I was like, Of course we’re together. This makes so much sense, the way nothing has ever made sense before."

At first, they kept their relationship to themselves, hiding it from their friend group. "We kept [our relationship] a secret," she told Elle. "Because we weren't really taking it seriously. 'Oh, whatever, we're just mates, we're just mates.'" But since they all lived in the shared house in Chapman, their friends caught on eventually.

They had a secret wedding in 2016.

Two years after moving to London, Robbie and Ackerley got married in a private ceremony in Bryon Bay, Australia. It was a small, intimate ceremony with only 50 people. Robbie wore a cream-colored off-the-shoulder dress with a big lace ruffle, and her hair was pulled into loose French braids, People reported. On December 19, 2016, Robbie shared a caption-less Instagram photo showing off her wedding ring as she gives her new husband a kiss.

Today, they keep their relationship private.

Although they've been married for years now, the Bombshell actress still keeps her relationship pretty mum. Aside from a rare recent appearance at the 2020 Golden Globes, the couple was spotted once publicly in April 2019, and before that, their last red carpet appearance together was the 2018 Golden Globes. Robbie occasionally shares Instagram photos of her British beau, like this winter wonderland photo from early January:

Robbie and her husband are also co-workers.

Robbie and Ackerley have their own company called Lucky Chap Productions, which has produced notable films such as I, Tonya (2018), Dream Land (2019), and Robbie's much-anticipated upcoming film, Birds of Prey (2020). "I’m a great advocate of doing business with your partner," she told Porter. "Even if we both have to fly to a country in-between where we both are for one night, we'll do it and then fly back to work the next day. Being married is actually the most fun ever, life got way more fun somehow. I have a responsibility being someone’s wife, I want to be better."

They want to have kids—some day.

In January 2019, Robbie spoke with Radio Times about her frustration with being asked about expanding her family with Ackerley. "I got married, and the first question in almost every interview is, 'Babies? When are you having one?' I'm so angry that there's this social contract," Robbie said. "You're married, now have a baby. Don't presume. I'll do what I'm going to do."

Robbie was asked again by Porter if she wanted to have kids. She replied that after strolling past a dog shelter with Ackerley, he asked her if they can take home a pit-bull puppy. "We already have a two-year-old [dog] who still acts like a puppy. I love him but he’s a handful, and for the last three days I haven’t slept," Robbie said. "I’m like, 'We're fostering her for the week,' and my husband's saying, 'No! We're keeping her.' And I'm saying, 'We absolutely cannot and if anything, you are now cementing in my mind that we cannot have kids. I can’t cope with two puppies, let alone children!'"

But the star has admitted that she does want to have kids eventually, just not now. "If I’m looking into my future 30 years from now, I want to see a big Christmas dinner with tons of kids there. But definitely not at the moment. That’s 100 percent certain," she added. The actress also told The Sunday Style: "I want tons of children. Well, maybe not too many. I grew up in a family of four [kids], so that sounds like a good number," The Sun reported. Either way, Robbie and Acklerley have the sweetest love story.
