So here we are, a week and change out from the Mare of Easttown finale, and we’re all wondering the question at the center of it—how could they kill off my sweet boy Evan Peters?

Ok, not that one, fine. Who killed Erin? Why? What does the man kidnapping young women have to do with it? What did they hire Guy Pearce for, if Richard Ryan is just a nice love interest for Mare? Why did Erin’s best friend allow Dylan to burn her diaries? What does the Deacon know?

As the mystery unfolds each week, the answer seems more far off and unpredictable. At this point, though, we know for certain that something strange is up with the Ross family—from John Ross’ presumed cheating on Lori to their cousin Billy’s strange response when asked how long Erin lived with him. It’s this family in particular that many Reddit sleuths have been zeroing in on as possible suspects in the larger case.

One compelling theory by user FuegoDaigo suggests that John Ross is the killer, and was having an affair with Erin before he murdered her. The theory goes that Mare’s best friend Lori knew about the affair, and suspects DJ could be John’s child. Billy’s strange response to probing about Erin is on account of John’s frequent visits when she stayed with him, and his awareness that John murdered her. The motive suggested is that Erin was also having a relationship with Mare’s son Kevin, who John Ross killed and made it look like an overdose. He then killed Erin because she knew this and threatened to report him. The final twist of the series, according to this theory, is that Erin’s child is revealed to be Kevin’s child, not John's—which would also explain Mare’s ex-husband Frank’s support of Erin and the baby.

Is your head spinning yet? It’s an interesting theory, as it ties the case back to Mare directly, which is to be expected in the intimate little town. This theory is not without holes, though—Lori asked her son if the affair was happening again with the same woman, which could not be Erin as Erin is now dead. It presumes their son knows that his father was having an affair with his own cousin, too, which is...a lot. It also begs the question of why kill Erin now, if she’s known about John’s murdering Kevin for years, and on top of all that, doesn’t connect to the other kidnapped girls in the town. Other users have commented that John Ross having an affair with Erin would be incest as well as statutory rape, and that it isn’t likely Lori would have stayed with him if she was aware of it.

For the first time in the series, John Ross' father appears in the trailer for Episode 6 and mentions a secret, which further alludes to the Ross family's involvement in some way. There's also the above YouTube video by Pete Peppers, which highlights that when John Ross approached Mare in an earlier episode to provide an alibi for Frank for the night Erin was killed, he was also providing an alibi for himself. It’s undeniable something is up with the Ross clan, and they’re sure to play a role in the unfolding saga.

If you don’t buy that, though, there’s always the Reddit theory that Lori Ross killed Erin based on the detail that Erin's body was placed in the same manner as the woman’s body on Lori's Dave Matthews Band t-shirt. At this point, Dave Matthews himself is as likely a suspect as any. Until Sunday night, folks.
