Reddit can be a lawless land, but from time to time its users come together for the greater good—such as to help solve the mystery at the center of HBO’s Mare of Easttown. The subreddit is a place people share their Sunday night Rolling Rock and hoagie pics, talk theories so detailed that even Dave Matthews becomes a suspect, and of course, try to crack the case at the center of the series. After last week’s episode, it seems they’re pretty good at it, too.
Last week I wrote about a Reddit theory that hypothesized John Ross to be Erin’s killer and the father of her child. That theory suggested that Lori and Billy were aware he'd had an affair with Erin, and Billy had been present for the murder. It also proposed that Erin and Mare’s son Kevin had been having a relationship, too, whom John Ross killed out of jealousy. According to this theory, the motive for Erin’s murder was her threatening to report John for killing Kevin. Finally, the twist of the series that this user proposed is that Erin’s child would be revealed to be Kevin’s child instead of John's.
This turned out to be less far off than expected. While it seems less likely after this episode that Kevin was murdered, we know for sure now that Billy was present for Erin’s murder, and that her child was likely conceived during an assault by one of her older cousins—Billy or John—at a family reunion in the Poconos. It seems far less likely now that Lori was previously aware who DJ’s father or Erin’s murderer was before John informed her it was Billy in Episode Six. The Reddit community thinks this was suspicious and a deliberate setup orchestrated by John, as John knew Lori would tell Mare.
So after Episode Six, Reddit is still pretty certain that John is DJ’s father and Erin’s murderer, as Billy seems too obvious a choice. Billy yelled “you are ruining my life because you can’t keep your dick in your pants!” to John, which users are suggesting is about Erin and not Lori. We know Billy is willing to take the fall for the crime, but users propose that he could have been blackout drunk during the crime and unaware who actually killed her, or is perhaps being threatened by his brother to confess. They have also pointed out that John telling Billy that he “needs to hear him say” he killed Erin was John coaching him. As for why John brought a gun fishing, it’s possible that he intends to kill Billy and make it look like a suicide since he knows Mare believes Billy is the culprit. If Mare believes Billy is the father and the killer, his death would put an end to the investigation without any suspicion falling onto John.
It’s less clear what Dylan is trying to hide from investigators, as his shock when he was told DJ wasn’t his child seemed genuine. Still, some Reddit users are suggesting he did know the child wasn’t his, but was being paid by the Ross family to keep the secret. What he knows about the situation is damaging enough that he was willing to threaten Jess at gunpoint over it, still. A handful of twists are still sure to come.
Do I sound like the Charlie Day meme from It’s Always Sunny yet? That’s what I feel like. Only one more Sunday night to go, people.
