Quitting the gym isn’t exactly easy. From ironclad contracts to that awkward, shame-filled conversation you need to have with a trainer or a sales rep, quitting a gym can very quickly become an emotional journey.

Reddit user MastrrBasser found that out the hard way when he decided to call his gym to tell it that he would like to break his gym contract because he was moving to a different city. However, the gym, Planet Fitness, insisted that the man either show up in person or get a certified letter of cancellation.

MastrrBasser then took things into his own hands by writing a hilarious letter in the style of a breakup note — obviously, this note struck a chord with everyone who has ever tried to quit a gym.

“It is with deep regret, and a heavy heart that I write this letter, but I must come forth with my intentions with sincerity and honesty,” he started the letter.

“Certain events in my life have put me in a different place, and while it was one of the more taxing decisions I’ve had to make of late, it is the right one. The purpose of this letter is to end my relationship with Planet Fitness Orange.”

He went on to say that he knows he’s been “distant,” but it’s because he’s “changed.”

“I have different needs now, and to be frank… you really haven’t changed at all,” he wrote.

“You’re still that bulky, purple and yellow building with the tootsie rolls at the counter. I don’t want to change you, and it pains me to think that we were once one, but are now separate and in different places.”

The man goes on to explain how he’s moved on to another gym, but he doesn’t want his old gym to be “jealous.”

“That’s not the Planet Fitness that I know and love,” he wrote. “I still love you, but more like a friend at this point.”

However, he concluded, “all good things must come to an end.”
