YOU MAY THINK you know all there is to know about the 1865 assassination of President Abraham Lincoln; John Wilkes Booth, an actor, shot the 16th POTUS in the head, shouted 'Sic Semper Tyranus,' and then Lincoln's VP, Andrew Johnson, took over. If Apple TV+'s Manhunt, based on the bestselling nonfiction book of the same name, has one thing to say, it's this: you have no idea how much more was going on.

Manhunt, which plays out over the course of seven hour-long episodes, feels like if Oliver Stone's JFK was set about 120 years earlier. It's a conspiracy thriller in the truest sense of the genre, centered on Lincoln's Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton (Tobias Menzies), as he not only leads the hunt for Booth (Anthony Boyle), but becomes obsessed with avenging a great man and friend, trying and failing to balance life with his family along the way.

"I suspect a lot of audience watching will have a lot to find in this story," Menzies said in an interview with Men's Health. "The chance to bring this story, an important story in America’s history, to a new audience felt like an exciting endeavor."

Viewers will follow three tracks, in a way, during Manhunt: Stanton's journey to discover the full extent of the conspiracy that led to Lincoln's assassination, Booth's escape from the scene of the murder, and a series of flashbacks that explore Stanton's relationship with Lincoln (Hamish Linklater) prior to his death. It all makes for some very compelling television, and should certainly fill the history fix for any fans of Oliver Stone movies or people in withdrawal after the end of Masters of the Air.
