The first thing Mandy Moore does when she walks into a hotel room is hit the mini-bar. What’s that you say, fact-checking department? Fine. By “hit,” we mean stashes her Garnier MoistureBomb sheet masks in there. “When I travel, I do that before I do anything else,” she says. “It makes them so refreshing.”
It’s a pretty great little tip — and she’s got a whole lot more! Here are a few other tidbits we got recently from the former pop star, current TV phenomenon (you don’t even need to watch This Is Us to wonder... what did happen to Jack?), and Garnier spokesperson.
She loves to age. The four hours she spends in the makeup artist’s chair to transform into the 60something version of her This Is Us character, Rebecca Pearson, are not that fun — “there are prosthetic pieces, and this skin ager that’s sort of like dried glue” — but afterwards she gets a glimpse of herself in 30 years. “Or at least a glimpse into what I’ll look like if I take good care of myself, because I think my character looks particularly well for her age,” she says. But aside from the motivation-inspiration part, “I love it at the end of the day because no matter how crappy you feel, when everything’s removed, you’re instantly 30 years younger."
She’s taking a less-is-more skin-care approach (for now). "I wear sunscreen, try to stay hydrated, get enough sleep — all of the easy precautionary measures for anybody at any age. I haven’t really upped the ante yet, but I probably need to start investigating some harder core tactics. I keep hearing about the vampire facial thing which sounds scary but also kind of interesting just because it’s more of a natural approach I guess [ed note: it uses platelet-rich plasma, derived from your own blood]."
And everything’s on the table. "I’m not a big never person. You never know what direction life is going to bend in."
She’s unclear on what her natural hair color is. "Maybe this [lifting a strand of her current chocolate brown] is close to it? But I think naturally I’m ashier, more of a dirty dishwater color. I’ve always felt most authentic and like the best version of myself as a brunette. It’s kind of like coming home."
Her last #empty was a $7 multi-tasker. "I use Garnier SkinActive Soothing Facial Mist as a toner right after the shower, and also right before makeup, and also on my Beautyblender. And after I do my makeup, once the powder is on, it’s the last thing I do — I spray it all over. It gives you that natural, dewy glow so you don’t look too finished and polished."
She also splurges on $400+ facials. "They’re my biggest beauty extravagance. I love Melanie Simon, who’s at Striike [the Streicher sisters’ beauty studio]. She’s fantastic. And I use the Ziip [Simon’s microcurrent device] at home. Not as often as I should but when I start to feel like there’s something coming up from below the surface, I do the setting where it kills bacteria on the skin. I highly recommend it. And I also see Joanna Vargas. You always leave her feeling uplifted and glowy, just like ahhhhh."
