Based on recent events, Michael Harlow could think of himself as extremely unlucky or one of the luckiest men alive. The Marine veteran and security guard from North Carolina’s Gaston County just won $100,000 from a scratch-off lottery ticket, and one of the first things he’s using his money for is a cruise with his wife, June, who is battling breast cancer. Right now, it seems like he’s leaning toward feeling lucky.

“I was a Marine. I have a beautiful wife. I have three boys and six grandchildren. The good Lord gave me that money to help fight this cancer with her,” he told Fox 46 Charlotte.

On his way to work earlier this month, Harlow stopped by a Circle K and picked up a book of Big Money Playbook lottery tickets, according to a North Carolina Lottery press release. He scratched off the tickets during some downtime at work.

“I couldn’t believe it,” he told NC Lottery. “I literally went up to one of our towers and let out the biggest, ‘Yes!’ I just yelled out, I was so happy.”

Harlow’s odds of winning were one in 600,000. After taxes, he took home $70,506.90, and of course, he’ll be using a lot of that for practical things like medical bills. But a first-class cruise doesn’t seem like such a frivolous way to spend some of that money either.

“My wife is battling breast cancer right now, and having something to look forward to will help her get through the chemo treatments,” he said in the press release. “I’ve already called the Carnival Cruise Line and upgraded our rooms to the biggest we can get.”

Harlow believes his luck will hold out for what really matters. “I am a betting man, and she’s going to make it,” he told Fox 46 of June’s health. Adding with a laugh, “I’ve given her 100,000 reasons to do it now. Ain’t that something?”
