Domestic violence probed in separate Erie shootings: Man dead, woman wounded; man wounded

Mayor Joe Schember's 2023 budget proposal includes nearly $40 million for the Erie Bureau of Police.

Erie police detectives are investigating two separate shootings on Thursday that appear to be related to domestic disputes. The incidents caused the death of one man and left a man and a woman wounded.

No one had been charged as of early Friday afternoon in shootings that happened at a residence in the 900 block of East 38th Street on Thursday afternoon and at an apartment in the 1800 block of West Eighth Street on Thursday night.

West Eighth Street shooting

A 26-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was found dead inside an apartment in the 1800 block of West Eighth Street — which is between Kahkwa Boulevard and Delaware Avenue — after Erie Bureau of Police officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting on Thursday at about 10:10 p.m., Erie police Lt. Mike Brady reported Friday morning.

The first officer who arrived on scene heard a woman screaming. Police then received a 911 call from a female who reported that she had been shot and needed help, Brady said.

Police forced open a door on the apartment building and heard a woman upstairs and went up to find blood in the apartment, according to Brady. Officers then encountered a 21-year-old woman who had an injury to the top of her head, he said.

The officers went into the apartment and found the man on the floor with a gunshot wound to the head, Brady said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman was taken to the hospital, where she was treated and released, according to Brady.

Investigators are treating the incident as a shooting and a homicide at this point, Erie police Deputy Chief Rick Lorah said Friday morning. Investigators have interviewed the woman, who was released, and planned to search the apartment as part of the ongoing investigation, he said.

An autopsy on the 26-year-old man was scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Friday.

East 38th Street shooting

The second shooting was reported on Thursday at about 3:30 p.m. in the 900 block of East 38th Street, near Perry Street.

According to Brady, a victim in that shooting, a 37-year-old man whose name was not released, was located in the 200 block of East Third Street.

The man was taken to UPMC Hamot and was later transferred to a hospital in Pittsburgh, where he was last reported to be in critical condition, Lorah said.

Officers spoke to a woman at the East 38th Street address who told them that she was inside the residence with her boyfriend when the man who was shot, whom she said was her ex-husband, arrived and got into an altercation with her boyfriend at the residence, Brady said.

She said the man she was with pulled out a gun and shot the male, who then fled.

One shot was fired during the altercation, according to Lorah. He said the man who was shot fled the residence, then got into a traffic accident before he arrived on East Third Street, where city police found him.

Police have spoken with the woman and her boyfriend as part of the investigation, Lorah said.

Two people have been killed and at least eight have been wounded by gunfire in Erie so far this month.
