How to Make Your Home Smell Good Without Burning It Down With Candles

Yahoo Beauty would like to introduce you to The New-New, a column by Beauty Director Dana Oliver on the latest products, tools, and treatments that she’d happily spend her hard-earned money on.

If there is a world record for the number of scented candles burned in a week, I’ve probably broken it.

My obsession with candles started in college, when I’d rebel against dorm rules and light up jars smelling of patchouli and neroli oil as I listened to Erykah Badu, Black Star, and Jill Scott. Very typical of my early “woke” days. Whether it was to set a particular mood or mask the smell of my roommate’s dirty laundry, candles have been both my saving grace and a haphazard weakness.

From leaving soot all over my bedroom ceilings and walls to falling asleep more times than I’d like to admit with the flame still going strong, candles aren’t exactly foolproof. However, the new Nest Fragrances liquidless diffusers most certainly are.

They feature slender reed-like sticks made from paper and infused with pure fragrance oils available in Bamboo, Grapefruit, and Moroccan Amber. When a reed is placed inside the open-metal stand, airflow helps it to emit the most heavenly aroma.

Unlike most fragrance diffusers, there’s no messy or greasy liquid you have to worry about spilling all over your nice tabletop, and unlike a candle, you don’t have to concern yourself about pets and small children getting too close to it. What I love even more about this product is that you can customize the scent power according to your personal preference or room size by simply putting two to four sticks inside the base at a time. And it doesn’t hurt that the “ScentSticks” last up to 90 days either.

I’ve had the Grapefruit Liquidless Diffuser atop my office desk, and its fresh, floral blend of pink grapefruit, lily of the valley, and coriander blossom perks up my senses and reenergizes me throughout the day.

Will I pack up all my scented candles for good? Probably not, but I can at least take a break and indulge in this much safer option of making my home smell good.

Nest Fragrances Liquidless Diffusers ($60) are available at nestfragrances.com and at Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Bluemercury, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue department stores.
