I've gotta say: after the culmination of She-Hulk, where CGI blurs of green pixels were twerking and smashing and screaming bloody murder left and right, I really needed some good news from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (Yes. Well over a year later, the scars incurred from the She-Hulk finale still haven't healed.)

Thankfully, we've been receiving a steady stream of cheery updates regarding the third Deadpool outing, AKA Ryan Reynolds's long-awaited MCU debut. The film's first trailer debuted during Super Bowl LVII, with an official title: Deadpool & Wolverine. After flirting with Hugh Jackman for over a year about getting the man to trade The Music Man for his old Wolverine threads, Reynolds finally worked his magic. You can watch the full trailer above.

In the preview, the TVA (depicted in Disney+'s Loki) captures Deadpool on his birthday. He's discovered in the multiverse by a TVA agent (Succession's Matthew Macfadyen), who convinces ol' Wade Wilson that the MCU desperately needs to be saved. "I smell what you're stepping in," Deadpool tells him. "Your little cinematic universe is about to change forever. I am the Messiah. I am Marvel Jesus." So... now we know how Deadpool joins the MCU—but we still don't really know why. There's no way Wolverine is the big bad of this story, so we may have to wait until we closer to the film's release date to find out what threat the superhero duo is up against.

Previously, Reynolds stated that Deadpool's "first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special." Posting a video to X (formerly Twitter) following Disney's D23 event, he told his fans, "Every Deadpool needs to stand out and stand apart. It’s been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down deep inside. And I…I have nothing. Yeah, just completely empty up here. And terrifying. But we did have one idea... Hey, Hugh? You want to play Wolverine one more time?" Jackman, in the background, responds, "Sure, Ryan."

Later on, Jackman offered his side of the story. In a new interview with Empire Film Podcast, he opened up about the the plot of the film. In short? We're really getting Wolverine vs. Deadpool. "We’re opposites, hate each other," Jackman said. "[Wolverine is] frustrated by [Deadpool], wants to be a million miles away from him or wants to punch him in the head. Unfortunately, he can’t be a million miles away from him in this movie, so I’m probably going to punch him in the head a lot." Something tells me Deadpool & Wolverine will have a different tone than the X-Men movies—where we encountered Jackman's tortured, isolated character.

Deadpool & Wolverine will hit theaters on July 26, 2024.
