“Mail on Sunday” Issued an Official Apology to Prince Harry

He got a retraction, too.

Back in December, Prince Harry sued Mail on Sunday and Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL) after the paper published false claims about his continued relationship (or lack of one) with the Royal Marines in the wake of his stepping back from his royal duties. According to Entertainment Tonight, Mail on Sunday issued an apology and a retraction and made a donation to one of Harry's charities, the Invictus Games.

Harry's legal action is just part of his battles against the publication. He and his wife, Meghan Markle, sued the paper over several articles published in February 2019, including the publication of a personal note that she had written to her father, Thomas Markle.

"An article on 25 October 2020 reported that Prince Harry had been accused by a top general of turning his back on the Royal Marines since withdrawing from his military roles in March and that, in an apparent snub to the Armed Forces, he had failed to reply to a letter from Lord Dannatt, a former Chief of the General Staff," Mail on Sunday's statement reads. "We now understand that Harry has been in contact in a private capacity with individuals in the military including in the Royal Marines to offer informal support since March and that whilst he did not initially receive the letter from Lord Dannatt referred to in the article due to administrative issues he has since replied on becoming aware of it. We apologize to Prince Harry and have made a donation to the Invictus Games Foundation."

In September, Markle lost a part of her legal battle with The Mail on Sunday's publisher, ANL, in regards to the letter. According to Sky News, ANL's team alleges that Markle "collaborated" with the authors of the book Finding Freedom, which includes details about the letter.
