MAFS Australia brides and grooms reveal how much is scripted

We have to admit, we’re feeling a little bit lost now Married At First Sight Australia is over for another season. The reality series, which sees singletons expertly matched to partners they meet for the first time on their wedding day, is enough to satisfy any reality TV craving with arguments, cheating, drink throwing and more.

While we patiently wait for the British version of the show to return to our screens (hurry up please, E4!), we have one question... How is the series is actually filmed? How many times they have to walk down to aisle? What happens when arguments happen off-screen? Here’s what the MAFS Australia cast have spilled about how the show is filmed.

They re-shoot the wedding multiple times

While it might look like a magical fairy tale moment, the contestants’ wedding days often take much longer to film than you think. Dan Webb from season six told Mamamia that "you do your wedding three or four times, so they can get different angles".

"They don't have music [when the bride walks down], it's pretty quiet," he said. "I didn't really enjoy my day, it was very stressful."

Season nine bride, Selina Chhaur, told Yahoo Australia that “you’ve got to do the walking down the aisle a few times, they pull you aside to do your separate vows, then we’ll go back, eat and chat some more.

“There’s so much that gets filmed that doesn’t get shown. So, we didn’t sleep that night. Our wedding went through until about four or five o’clock in the morning.”

They have to get approval from producers about their clothes

Series 10 bride Janelle Han revealed that they often have to check their outfits with producers before filming. "For commitment ceremonies and any of those sorts of events, we submit three photos and then they finalise the final one," she told Refinery29 Australia. "That's because they don't want any outfit clashing."

Plus, she revealed that everyone does their own hair and makeup.

If you have a fight behind the scenes, you have to call producers

Series six groom Michael Brunelli revealed that he was allegedly told that he shouldn’t get to know his partner away from the cameras, and if they had an argument behind the scenes, they should stop and call producers immediately to record it.

“Call the producer so they can bring the camera and can start recording… then you've got to keep going with the fight,” he said in a TikTok video.

Arguments are real, but might be encouraged by producers

Michael also shared on TikTok while the drama and arguments are very much real, reactions might be encouraged by producers.

“If they know you have a problem with someone [and] they know you're feeling a little bit emotional, they might put you at a dinner party sitting across from them, knowing that after a few hours something is going to brew,” he said on TikTok.

Contestants are paid to appear on the show, but it's not much

While appearing on reality TV may seem luxurious and glamorous, season nine bride Domenica Calarco said her and her fellow birdes and grooms were “basically on minimum wage.”

"It's enough to cover your rent, living expenses because when you live [on the show] everything is taken care of," she told The Kylie and Jackie O Show. "You don't have to pay anything. That's about maybe like an average salary, I'd say."
