Much like Betty Cooper and her iconic ponytail, Cheryl Blossom and red lipstick just belong together. For her Riverdale role, Madelaine Petsch has been at the center of numerous stylish moments, including a TBT outfit that we're still not over. However, as Madelaine revealed to Allure, her character's makeup is also responsible for sending a somewhat secret message.
Whether you realized it or not, Cheryl's makeup on the show is often indicative of her mood. Madelaine explained this to Allure, noting that during season four, we've seen Cheryl embrace a lighter look. "This year, we actually are experimenting a little bit more with eye makeup," she said. "I used to do the same eye look most of the year, and now, according to my outfit and the mood that Cheryl's in, I'll kind of change it accordingly, which is really fun."
She explained that because of her character's recent Riverdale happenings, Cheryl has been changing up her beauty routine. "[Cheryl's] in a good place — at least she thinks she's in a good place, mentally; in reality, we all know she's not — but she's playing with makeup; she's happy. I think that's where all of that stems from, changing things up a little bit. And she's got a good relationship. So now she's like, 'My girlfriend's not just going to break up with me because I changed my eyeliner,' or whatever."
We'll have to wait and see what the rest of season four has in store for Cheryl, and her choice of makeup, but there's one beauty item that will always remain a staple, and a secret. Madelaine told Allure that it's unlikely the show will ever reveal the exact brand of Cheryl's lip color. "It's kind of just like our little secret on set," she said. "We do like to play around a lot, but it's something that we've always kept secret, for some reason, and now it's kind of like a running theme." But don't worry, you can always recreate your own Cheryl-inspired red at home. And if you're unsure where to start, you can always go with a tried and true red lipstick staple — Ruby Woo.
