We’re still a full year away from Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story remake starring Rachel Zegler and Ansel Elgort, but the anticipation is already at an all-time high. Just ask Maddie Ziegler, who will show off her “cool” dance skills as Velma, one of the Jet girls, in the upcoming film.
“It was honestly one of the best experiences I’ve ever had,” the former Dance Moms star told Entertainment Tonight in a recent interview. “To work with Steven Spielberg was a pretty life-changing thing, so I’m really grateful for that.”
With nearly six decades between the 2020 remake and the original, one question undoubtedly comes to mind: Will Spielberg’s new version make major changes from the classic movie musical? According to Maddie, musical lovers who adore the original will be just as satisfied.
“We stayed really true to the value of the first movie,” she told ET. “We really wanted to bring that back to life. We didn't want to make it too modern…. The costumes, the hair and makeup, are all very from that era.”
Of course, with an all-star cast including Broadway icons Rita Moreno, Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Brian d'Arcy James, Josh Andrés Rivera, and Mike Faist, there’s bound to be a slew of fresh energy stirred into the mix. Maddie seemed to agree, saying that the film adds “flair from the new cast,” adding: “I learned so much from all the dancers and the actors. Everyone is brilliant.”
Sadly, we have to wait another 12 months before we see Maddie shine on the big screen. In the mean time, you can always re-watch Leap, carve out an afternoon for a season of Dance Moms, or brush up on your Sharks and Jets knowledge by streaming the original 1961 West Side Story. After all, when you're a Jet — you're a Jet all the way!
