Macaulay Culkin Says He Had a Disastrous Audition for 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'
When we first saw the cast list for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time . . . in Hollywood, there were a few surprise names—which are always fun to spot in a QT jam, since he’s known for rolling with familiar faces (see: Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, Michael Madsen).
In an alternate universe, we would’ve seen another unexpected name next to Lena Dunham, Maya Hawke, and Al Pacino: Macaulay Culkin. In Esquire’s March cover story, where Ryan D'Agostino catches up with the former child star of Home Alone fame, “Mack” (the name he prefers to be called, actually) said he auditioned for Once Upon a Time . . . in Hollywood.
“It was a disaster,” Culkin admitted. “I wouldn’t have hired me. I’m terrible at auditioning anyway, and this was my first audition in like eight years.”

He didn’t say which part he auditioned for, but there were a ton of them to go around—though you could imagine Culkin having some fun with the Tex Watson character, who is played by Austin Butler in the film. Not to mention, casting Culkin would’ve been a clever and extremely meta move for Tarantino, including the star of Home Alone in a movie that ends with a home invasion fantasy come to life.
Even though a Tarantino-esque auteur hasn’t given a meaty, awards season part quite yet, we’re just happy he’s acting again, like his role in last year’s Changeland. And he is, too.
“No matter how much I act like a curmudgeonly old man, it’s still fun to get back in the saddle once in a while and play around,” he said.
