From what we learned in our March 2020 cover story, it sounded like Macaulay Culkin—after somewhat of a hiatus from acting in big-time projects—might be getting back in the game again. Even though he told us that he had a disastrous audition for Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, we knew it wouldn’t be long before he landed a starring role again.

Turns out, American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy had his eye on Mack all along. In February, Murphy casted the Home Alone star in Season 10 of the FX anthology series—but didn’t reveal anything about the season’s theme, or what kind of role Culkin could be playing. Now, thanks to an interview Murphy gave to E! News about his Netflix series, Hollywood, we know that he has some appropriately batshit plans for Culkin.

“So, I have this very, very great insane part,” Murphy said. “And I asked to speak to him on the phone and he said OK. [When] I cast, I never let people read things, usually. I said, ‘OK, here’s the pitch.’ And I told them the character and I told him he has crazy, erotic sex with Kathy Bates and does other things. And he paused and he goes, ‘This sounds like the role I was born to play.’ So, he signed up right then and there.”

Interesting! This seems to be a familial thing lately, as Culkin’s brother, Kieran, can be found over at HBO playing out his darkest fantasies with an older woman in Succession. It’s hard to speculate what those “other things” Mack will be up to will be, since Season 10 of American Horror Story might have to change its “weather-dependent” theme because of the coronavirus pandemic. Regardless, whatever kind of tantric sex he’s having, it’ll be good to see Culkin onscreen again.

“You know, it came about just because it’s how I always do things where I have always loved Macaulay Culkin’s work,” Murphy said. “I loved everything that he’s done, I love the stuff he did in Home Alone, I also loved the sort of the older, more recent stuff that he did. And he hasn’t worked in a while.”

Although Season 10 has been written and is still set to premiere this fall, production has been halted because of the coronavirus pandemic, too.
