The Japanese fashion brand Comme des Garçons may just be one of the edgiest fashion labels out there — especially when it comes to beauty, too.
Take, for example, the Spring 2020 show presented last week in Paris. Hair artist Julien d'Ys sculpted red wigs into crimped bulbous, almost unicorn-like forms for the runway show. The outrageous look wasn't a surprise — designer and founder of the brand Rei Kawakubo has been known to showcase extreme beauty looks on the runway of her shows for years since she founded the line in the 1970s.
Which brings us to her latest beauty experiment: a special collaboration with MAC, which is the first of its kind. Inspired by the second-skin tattoo-like fabrics from Comme des Garçons’ Fall 2020 collection, the designer teamed up with MAC to create a limited-edition kit in which you create your own temporary tattoos with various MAC products, such as the Brushstroke 24-hour Liner in Brushblack, Pro-Longwear Eye Liner in Definedly Black, Mountain Air, and Night Trail, Liquidlast 24-Hour Waterproof Liner in Point Black and Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder. The products come in reusable, vacuum-sealed packaging that matches the fabric from Comme des Garçons' Fall 2019 collection.
The fun part about the collab is that it's designed to mimic real tattooed skin that's been faded from time. "One of the greatest shades of black is the one that we can see in tattooed skin: black ink in faded tattoos tends to turn into a cloudy warm blue, defining and shadowing its contours," says MAC's director of makeup artistry, Baltasar Gonzalez Pinel. "That precise quality of blue-black enhances the dimension and placement of the designs and transforms the deeply personal act of tattooing... it becomes 'body literature' instead of just 'body paint.'"
The catch is, however, that you only get this super limited-edition product (although you can buy the individual products separately, without the packaging, online or at your local MAC store) at the brand-new Dover Street Parfums Market in Paris through October 13. The new store is an extension of the Dover Street Market fashion and lifestyle stores around the world, also owned by Comme des Garçons. And it’s definitely worth going, if you can.
The brand-new beauty emporium just opened this month in the heart of the Marais in Paris and is a true destination for any beauty lover. It's two floors full of incredible products, including tons of indie brands you can’t find anywhere else. Take, for example, skin care from Oumere, a luxury line created by a Cellular Biologist, or colorful nail polishes by indie staple Uslu Airlines. Other brands include the New York-based C.O. Bigelow — the very first time the products have been stocked in France. The very French and sustainable line La Bouche Rouge has a counter alongside Gucci beauty.
Of course, you'll also find Comme des Garçons’ own line of fragrances as well as Thom Browne's brand-new scent. Byredo also stocks its products in the new space — founder Ben Gorham even came up with Byredo's unconventional store display pillar within the store.
So, even if you can’t make it to pick up the MAC collab, which retails for $247 (€225), you'll want to check out the new beauty destination next time you visit the City of Lights.
