Mabel, the singer behind the hit “Don’t Call Me Up,” has a new track for those who struggle with loneliness during the holidays.
Titled “Loneliest Time of Year,” Mabel captured how for some people, the holidays can heighten feelings like loneliness, loss and depression. In the song, released Friday, she sings lines like, “Sorry I’m not so merry/But I feel like this yearly/Christmas time isn’t my vibe/Brings no joy into my life” and “If I’m feeling lonely/I can’t be the only one.”
While for many people the holidays bring extra joy, that’s not the case for everyone. On social media, Mabel said “Loneliest Time of Year” is a reminder of just how painful the holidays can be for some people and to check in on your friends this season.
“‘Loneliest Time of Year’ out nowww,” Mabel shared on Instagram. “Important to remember that what can be the most wonderful time of year for some can be the loneliest time of year for someone else, so be kind and take care of each other this Christmas.”
If you struggle during the holidays with loneliness, you are not alone. Mighty contributor Christen Bensten shared how loneliness affects her in the article, “When Having No Family Affects Your Mental Health During the Holidays,” and added a message for those who can relate:
If you are feeling that red hot Christmas loneliness, I feel it too. And I wish Santa could hug that away. But, if he can’t, then I invite you to wrap yourself in a cozy blanket near that beautifully decorated tree and practice self-care. Give yourself what you were not given by stopping and listening to your own needs and being present with care and a nonjudgmental attitude. We will survive this holiday season like we’ve survived all the ones in the past. I wish all you beautiful, war-torn souls in my boat heavenly peace.
