Luther fans have a Bond related theory after watching The Fallen Sun

Idris Elba finally made his return as DCI John Luther in Netflix's new movie Luther: The Fallen Sun, which dropped on Friday (10th March). Fans of the original series have raced to watch the film, and whilst some haven't been the biggest fans of its new plot lines, others have come up with an interesting theory after watching the film's ending, and it all leads to 007.

To recap, after Luther finally manages to take down David Robey (Andy Serkis) in his hidden lair in Norway, Luther is arrested again and taken in a helicopter. We presume to go to hospital for his injuries, before being transferred to prison. However, when Luther wakes up, we discover, via Schenk (Dermot Crowley), he is actually in a rather fancy government safe house.

As Schenk gives Luther back his mended iconic coat, we see a number of black cars turn up and Schenk tells Luther he doesn't think he's being sent to jail anymore. The pair head outside where they are greeted by Tim Cranfield (Guy Williams), who congratulates Luther on defeating Robey. He then says "the chief" would like a "word" and indicates for Luther to get in the car, which is where the film ends.

Viewers of Luther: The Fallen Sun have been theorising as to who the chief could be, and many are suggesting this is a hint Idris Elba has been cast as the next James Bond.

One person tweeted: "Ok no spoilers but hear me out… Was that #Luther ending a hint that Idris Elba is the new James Bond?"

Another shared a similar theory saying: "#LutherTheFallenSun - wow. No spoilers here but did that ending mean what I think it did?!?!"

And another said: "That #LutherTheFallenSun ending is surely a gateway to him being the new bond?"

Over the last few years there's been a lot of speculation Idris Elba will be taking over from Daniel Craig as the next James Bond.

However, his is just one of many names people are suggesting could be the next 007, including Regé-Jean Page and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, with no one yet to be confirmed.

We don't currently know who the "chief" in Luther: The Fallen Sun is supposed to be, but it's likely it could be the person in charge of running MI5 or MI6. In the James Bond movies, the chief of MI6 is referred to as "M".

Even though the name of the chief is different, it does feel like there could definitely be scope for Luther doing something within MI6. However, it feels very unlikely that the character of Luther would be the next James Bond as James bond is a character within himself.

Idris Elba on the other hand? Yeah, we could definitely see him as 007.
