Luke Perry And Cameron Boyce Were Left Out Of The Oscars In Memoriam Tribute
Billie Eilish sang the In Memoriam tribute at the Oscars last night.
The Oscars failed to put actors Luke Perry and Cameron Boyce in the tribute.
Say a sad sayonara to award show season, because the Academy Awards have officially come and gone. In case you missed the show last night (in which case, I can't blame you, it was long AF), here’s a quick summary of literally everything that happened: Parasite made history and won a whopping four (out of six) Oscars, Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig were easily the funniest presenters of the night, Brad Pitt and Regina King were looking rather…friendly, and Billie Eilish gave a beautiful performance of “Yesterday” by The Beatles for the In Memoriam segment of the show. But as touching as Billie's performance was, the tribute itself was flawed.
As Billie sang, the list of actors we lost in 2019 were displayed across the screen behind her. And while it's important way to remember those we've lost who made an impact in the industry, two notable people were disappointingly left out of the tribute: Luke Perry and Cameron Boyce. Luke, who was loved for his roles in Beverly Hills, 90210 and Riverdale, passed away at 52 from a stroke. Cameron, who starred in Disney Channel's Jessie and Descendants movies, died of a fatal seizure in June—he was 20.
Given the tragic and untimely nature of their deaths, viewers of the program were understandably upset at the Academy for failing to honor Luke and Cameron in the tribute. As one Twitter user put it, "I will never understand that on a night like the Oscars, they'll only include stars that have passed in the memoriam if they were included in the Academy nominees. It's so disrespectful to not honor people like Luke Perry and Cameron Boyce."
From the looks of it, people online seem to agree:
shame on the academy for not including luke perry in the “in memoriam” tribute. seeing as ‘once upon a time in hollywood’ was the last film he made before he passed AND it was up for best picture, I have no words other than I’m disappointed.

Wait a minute? Let me see if I'm understanding this...the Oscars had a memoriam and somehow Luke Perry was excluded despite that he's in one of the nominated films?! pic.twitter.com/3nth2skJHp

As messy as this is, the Academy has yet to respond to the outrage.
