  • Season 19 of American Idol is underway, and Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie are back as judges for the season.

  • In last week’s season premiere, one 17-year-old singer got turned away, and her dad was anything but pleased.

  • Luke Bryan had the ultimate comeback.

A new season of American Idol comes with yet another memorable audition. Only, this time it’s not so much about the singer as it is her cantankerous father.

Seventeen-year-old Danica Steakley took the audition stage with her father, Lieutenant Dan, a 73-year-old U.S. Navy veteran. While she sang for the judges, Dan played the guitar, all the while quietly cheering his daughter on. As you can imagine, when Luke and Lionel said it wasn’t the right time for her on American Idol, Dan had some thoughts. Though, instead of saying them to their face, he stormed out the door and muttered to himself while cameras followed along.

“Come on, let’s go,” Dan said to Danica while she protested, thinking it was professional to just walk out. “We’re leaving. ‘Oh, I just think you need some more time…’ Why didn’t they just say no right away? I don’t even know any Luke Bryan songs anyway besides ‘Knockin’ Boots.’ Next time I’ll have her audition for The Voice.”

It was that last line that caught Luke’s attention.

“Welp, hopefully @DanicaSteakley’s Dad knows your songs @blakeshelton haha! #AmericanIdol,” he wrote on Twitter.

Naturally, fans can’t stop cracking up over both Dan’s reaction and Luke’s response. But we’re obviously most impressed with Danica’s positive attitude and grace while accepting constructive criticism from the judges.
