LSU plants flag in Texas end zone after Tigers defeat Longhorns

It’ll be two years to the day Monday since Baker Mayfield famously planted an Oklahoma flag on the Ohio State logo after leading his team to a win, and LSU celebrated the milestone with a flag plant of its own Saturday night in Austin, Texas.

Senior safety Kenan Jones ran through an end zone waving a massive purple LSU flag before his teammates gathered around to stake their claim after the No. 6 Tigers defeated the No. 9 Longhorns 45-38. A player can be heard saying “This is our field.”

Despite his enthusiasm, Jones didn’t quite go full Mayfield, though. That would have entailed a flag plant at the 50-yard line and an additional victory lap around the field.

This wasn’t the first time Texas was on the losing end of a flag plant, either. Six weeks after Mayfield debuted the move, he did it again when the Sooners took down the Longhorns in October 2017, though that was at the neutral site Cotton Bowl game in Dallas. But you get the point.

Like many things meant to be fun in sports, Mayfield’s 2017 demonstration was not well-received all around. He apologized a few days later, clarifying that he “didn’t mean for it to be disrespectful at all.”

It’s totally possible college sports fans have evolved in the last two years and LSU won’t get any hate this time around. But who are we kidding?
