New low-cost airline adds Phoenix-Canada flights. Where you can go and how to get a deal

Phoenix is getting a new airline with a new route to Canada.

Lynx Air will launch service from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to its hub of Calgary, the largest city in the province of Alberta, starting in February 2023.

It's one of four new routes the carrier will launch next year as it begins flights between Canada and the U.S. Lynx also will offer Las Vegas-Calgary, Los Angeles-Calgary and Orlando-Toronto services.

The announcement coincides with recent news that Canada will end COVID-19 travel restrictions starting Oct. 1, and follows on the heels of established airlines at Sky Harbor reintroducing Canadian routes earlier in 2022 after they were suspended during the pandemic.

What is Lynx Air?

Lynx Air is a startup carrier based in Calgary. It was previously known as Enerjet and operated as a charter airline, but rebranded as an ultra-low-cost carrier in November 2021.

It operates a fleet of Boeing 737 planes that seat up to 189 passengers.

When the Phoenix flights begin, Lynx Air will become Sky Harbor's 24th airline and the first new airline to debut international flights here since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Lynx Air will also become the airport's third carrier offering flights to Canada. Air Canada and WestJet are the only other carriers at Sky Harbor that serve Canada, airport spokesman Greg Roybal said.

The large number of flights between Phoenix and Canada reflects the demand for leisure and business travel between the countries, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said in a statement.

“Canada is the Number One international employer in Phoenix, and we have a large community of Canadian ex-pats and winter visitors," she said. "We love seeing them here!”

Pre-pandemic, international flights had an economic impact of $3 billion per year in Phoenix, according to Sky Harbor staff. More than 23% of Arizona's international visitors come from Canada.
